Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray Files Appeal1675343

As expected, Michael Jackson's former doctor Conrad Murray has filed an appeal to challenge his involuntary manslaughter conviction.

According to TMZ, Murray filed the petition in pro per, which means he has decided to forego hiring legal representation and represent himself. He reportedly listed "Men's Central Jail" and his booking number in the space on the appeal document where a lawyer would normally list a firm's name or contact information. TMZ also reported that although Murray seems to be without a lawyer, he is still in communication with Nareg Gourjian, one of the attorneys who represented him during his manslaughter trial. "This case presents a gold mine of issues for any appellate lawyer," Gourjian told TMZ. "Dr. Murray is confident that the Court of Appeal will vindicate him." Following the guilty verdict, Murray's lead defense lawyer Ed Chernoff told CNN, "What matters most right now is trying to keep Dr. Murray from taking up a prison cell in this community. That's what we're focusing on right now, and we'll deal with an appeal after that." Murray was sentenced to four years in jail Tuesday, but due to overcrowding, he's unlikely to serve his full term.

'Paranormal Activity 4' Confirmed By Paramount

Despite low budgets, each film has made more than $80 million in the U.S.

After the third installment made just under $108 million in the U.S. alone, few could really doubt that a "Paranormal Activity 4" would be here just in time for Halloween 2012. The found-footage series has become Paramount's yearly sure thing, since the low-budget thrillers have each earned more than $80 million domestically.

"Paranormal Activity 3" played a key role in securing Paramount's spot as the top-earning studio of 2011, so when the studio casually unveiled plans for the next installment during their victory-lap press release, it almost went unnoticed.

The release reads: "In 2012, Paramount's release slate highlights include 'World War Z,' a zombie thriller starring Brad Pitt and directed by Marc Forster, 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation,' the next installment in the global franchise starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Channing Tatum, a new chapter in the 'Paranormal Activity' franchise, and 'The Dictator,' starring Sacha Baron Cohen and directed by Larry Charles, the team behind 'Borat.'"

"Paranormal 3," directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, took the series into the past, looking at what could be considered the series' origins story. While the story explained why the demon had such a liking for the sisters, Katie and Kristi, it left many of the questions from the modern-day "Paranormal 2" unanswered.

As for whether Joost and Schulman would return for a second round of directing, the team told MTV News they were open to it. "I had a blast. I'd do it again," Schulman said.

Joost joked that they'd take the series even further into the past. "We have some ideas. It's going to be just drawings — calligraphy and watercolors. And set in the 1800s."

Iowa Caucus: Newt Gingrich Supporter Stands By Her Man

'I think he can beat Barack Obama,' 21-year-old tells MTV News.

URBANDALE, IOWA — With just hours to go before Iowa voters go to caucus, even as Newt Gingrich's poll numbers slipped from their former lofty perch to fourth place, one of his most-fervent campaign staffers told MTV News on Monday that she's blocking it out and keeping her eye on the prize.

"I don't pay a lot of attention to those polls. ... I like to focus on the goal to the very end," said Myranda Kazos, an energetic political pixie who has moved into a hotel room in Des Moines and put her life on hold in order to help Gingrich finish strong in Iowa. "I'm here to work and do the very best I can."

Kazos, 21, plans to take her LSAT exam soon, but in the meantime, she said she's logging 18-hour days working for the Gingrich campaign. Her hoarse voice is a testament to the handful of all-nighters she's pulled, as well as all-in days during which the self-described Newt obsessive has made more than 900 calls to voters in an attempt to lock in their vote.

The history and political science major at the University of South Dakota first got involved in politics in 2006 and has been a proud conservative booster ever since. In fact, though she can't caucus again this year because she's a South Dakota resident, she has some strong reasons for coming out for Gingrich.

"I think he can beat Barack Obama," she said confidently, bucking the trend of the 41 percent of Iowa voters who were reportedly undecided as the big day loomed, according to a poll released Monday. "I think he has the résumé, the intellect, the charisma. ... I don't think the other ones can [beat Obama]. ... I believe in his policies 100 percent."

With the 7 p.m. Tuesday caucus hour fast approaching, the main Des Moines campaign offices for the former Speaker of the House were not as frantic as you might imagine.

Around lunch time (hot dogs and baked beans, bananas, cookies and lots of Diet Coke), more than a dozen campaign volunteers and staffers were working their cell phones as they made the final round of voter calls from a non-descript workspace tucked into a generic office park on the outskirts of town. (In fact, it was just around the corner from the slightly buzzier campaign headquarters of former Senator Rick Santorum, who had made a surprise surge over the past week to overtake Gingrich in the final polling.)

Across the room, a grade-school-age campaign worker markered a Newt sign ("Salute for Newt!") in the shadow of what looked like her other scrawled handiwork ("I Newt It!" "We've Got Nthusiasm!") as another plugged into her iTouch and dozed on a blanket in a far corner behind her mother's desk.

Kazos stressed that she's not a one-issue voter, but that there are several aspects of Gingrich's résumé that appeal to her.

"I like the concept of a candidate who has a broad spectrum of things that I like and a broad spectrum of things I think he could actually do," she said, naming a strong defense, his solid Christian conservative values, views on abortion and gay marriage, and a robust economy as her top concerns.

Among the other issues she said she agrees with Gingrich on is his immigration policy. "I like the fact that it's something that's realistic. ... If those people are gang members ... we'll target those ones and kick them out, but [otherwise] let's help people find a plan where they can stay, let's work on securing the border."

If you've been anywhere near a TV during the past week or so, it was impossible to avoid the landslide of negative ads against Gingrich, portraying him as a flip-flopper, Democrat sympathizer and lobbying machine.

But Kazos, who said she's too busy working to watch much TV, said she's proud that Gingrich has taken the high road and not lavished millions on attack ads against his rivals. "At the end of the day, I say, a conservative is someone who cares about the country. ... At the end of the day, we all agree that we don't want Barack Obama in office," she said. "We want a win for the conservative party, our values, our beliefs. If the other candidates truly wanted that the way I do, the way Newt does, they wouldn't attack the other candidates."

'Bel Ami' Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Robert Pattinson breaks away from Edward Cullen in the story of one man's rise to the top of Parisian society.

Ladies, say goodbye to Edward Cullen and hello to George Duroy.

The newest "Bel Ami" trailer has hit the Web, showcasing a Robert Pattinson who is very different from the one fans have come to know and love in "The Twilight Saga."

The sex-filled drama follows penniless soldier Duroy on his rise to the top of the Parisian social ladder thanks to his manipulation and seduction of the wives of the French elite. Needless to say, fans who want a lot of nudity and friskiness to go along with their daily dose of Pattinson should not be disappointed by this latest preview, which follows an earlier "Bel Ami" trailer released in July.

While the film doesn't have a release date yet in the U.S., viewers in the U.K. will be able to see it starting March 2. For now, here are five key scenes from the brand-new trailer!

Meet the Ladies
There's a reason directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod enlisted Pattinson: He's one of the biggest sex symbols around, and Duroy is a playboy in every sense of the word. As important a character as he is, the ladies Duroy seduces are also integral to the story. About a fourth of the way through the trailer, Pattinson is seen sitting across from the three women who will act as his love interests: Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci and Kristin Scott Thomas. These ladies likely have no idea what emotional roller coaster is in store for them.

Sex, Sex and More Sex
Pattinson has been pretty upfront about the fact that "Bel Ami" includes plenty of sex and — in his words — "a lot of my crack in it." This trailer teases those aspects of the movie, as Pattinson can be spotted frequently getting frisky with Thurman, Ricci and Thomas. But it's his slow seduction methods that have really captured our interest. Whether he's drawing a finger down Ricci's neck or flirting with Thomas in a church, Pattinson seems to have come a long way from the brooding Edward Cullen.

"I've Been Such a Fool"
You've got to love a man who can admit when he's wrong. The crux of the movie pivots on Duroy's bad behavior, so it should come as no surprise that he eventually gets in trouble for it — at least that's what it looks like when he admits to Ricci's character, "I've been such a fool." Whether that means he will learn from his actions is yet to be seen, but we doubt it based on all of the other dramatic occurrences in the trailer.

"Get Out of My House!"
Between "Bel Ami" and Pattinson's other project, "Cosmopolis," the man best known as a sparkly vampire is getting the chance to show he can be more than just a heartthrob. And he gives us a preview in the trailer when he yells, "Get out of my house!" breaking down his character's usually composed façade.

A Man's Reflection
The trailer is scattered with shots of Duroy staring at his own reflection, but two pivotal instances bookend the video. In the first, Duroy gazes at his face in a small, broken mirror, looking unsatisfied with what he sees. But toward the end of the trailer, there is a (shirtless!) full-body shot of Duroy staring at himself yet again. In the voice-over, he emphatically states, "There is no next life, and I am going to live." It's clear Duroy has undergone significant changes since the beginning of the film, but we have a gut feeling those changes aren't going to end well for him.
